Meet Nihan

I grew up in Türkiye, where food was never just food — it was joyful living and connection.

As soon as I could walk, I was involved in growing, shopping for, cooking, and preserving food with my mother, aunties, and grandmothers.

Learning with them was immersive.
Sensory.
Alive.

Food was creativity.
Joy.
Celebration.

These women didn’t follow measured recipes. They followed something far more ancient: the wisdom of their bodies, intuition, and traditions passed down through generations.

And of course, the long tables under the grapevine pergola.
The gatherings.
The laughter.
The flavours.

Both of my great-grandmothers had vineyards, orchards, and gardens where we grew our own fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

asked in the warmth of the sun, abundant grapes, fragrant roses we made into rose jam, the smell of tomatoes on the vine.
We knew intuitively what was ready to be picked, which branches needed pruning, when the soil needed tending.

The Disconnect

As I grew older, the world changed, and so did mine.

I found myself stressed as a married professional in Canada, where the warmth of food preparation gave way to stress, perfectionism, trying to “do it right.”

Grocery shopping and cooking became another burden to manage.

Another thing to perform.

Another place to feel wrong.

The Rediscovery

Meanwhile, my body was calling for something different.

Softer.
Kinder.
Truer.

That’s when I began reconnecting with my body, the earth, and the culinary arts, not as proving, but as presence.
